Rooftop solar for Bihar homes — NBPDCL or SBPDCL, bill first

Independent advice for domestic connections across Bihar’s two distribution companies. The Gangetic plain brings hot summers but also monsoon cloud and winter smog that trim real yield — your slab bill still decides payback after central CFA.

Bihar is one of India’s most populous states with a fast-growing urban belt around Patna — yet rooftop solar economics here depend on whether your DISCOM bill recovers net cost after PM Surya Ghar CFA, not on a generic “Bihar average” chart. Sealix advises; we are not NBPDCL, SBPDCL, or your installer. Start with the free home check.

Which DISCOM is on your bill?

Bihar domestic supply routes through two distribution companies. Read your bill header before selecting on pmsuryaghar.gov.in — wrong selection stalls feasibility.

Patna metro and most capital-region suburbs sit on SBPDCL. Border towns near UP or Jharkhand may show a different company — follow the bill, not the map pin.

Bihar added a state top-up in August 2026 (₹10,000/kW, up to ₹20,000) — about ₹40,000 / ₹80,000 / ₹98,000 with central CFA — and BERC waived application and meter-testing charges in July 2026. PM Surya Ghar CFA in Bihar

Central residential CFA is commonly ₹30,000 / ₹60,000 / up to ₹78,000 for eligible 1–3 kW+ systems after commissioning, plus Bihar’s ₹10,000/kW state top-up (max ₹20,000). Confirm the state line on your portal file. Full money page: solar subsidy in Bihar · walkthrough: PM Surya Ghar guide.

Monsoon and winter haze — plan honestly

June–September cloud cover across the Gangetic plain reduces daily generation versus dry-season peaks. November–January smog trims irradiance for weeks each year. Patna’s dense lanes and multi-storey neighbours add site-specific shade on top. Size from annual bill units, not a summer-only estimate or a Rajasthan comparison chart.

Net metering

Grid-tied rooftop solar needs a bi-directional net meter from your Bihar DISCOM. Settlement rules follow the BERC tariff order in force at commissioning — confirm live wording on your DISCOM portal before signing an installer quote. National explainer: net metering in India.

Bihar is the state where "not yet" is most often the right answer

We would rather say this plainly than sell you a plant. Across Bihar, a large share of domestic households sit at a consumption level where rooftop solar does not repay itself in a reasonable period — and no amount of good sun changes that, because the size of your bill sets the ceiling on what solar can possibly save.

The logic is worth spelling out, because it is the opposite of how solar is usually sold. A plant's savings are bounded by what you currently pay for energy. A household paying ₹600 a month cannot be saved more than ₹600 a month, and in practice will be saved considerably less, because fixed charges and duties survive commissioning and the cheapest units in your lowest slab are worth little to displace. Meanwhile the net cost after assistance does not scale down proportionally — a small system costs more per kilowatt than a larger one, and the process overheads of feasibility, net metering and society approval are identical whether you save ₹600 or ₹3,000.

The result is that the honest threshold is a bill level, not a roof. Homes averaging under roughly 150 to 200 units a month rarely clear a sensible payback. If your twelve-month average sits there, the correct advice is to wait — and any vendor who tells you otherwise is describing their business rather than yours.

What to do instead, if the numbers say wait

Waiting is not doing nothing. Three steps genuinely improve your position and cost little or nothing.

Track twelve months of units, not rupees. Note the seasonal shape — a Patna summer with air conditioning looks nothing like a December bill. Many households discover their average is higher or lower than they assumed, and the annual figure is the only one worth sizing from.

Spend on efficiency first. At this consumption level, the cost per unit saved through LED lighting, an efficient ceiling fan, sensible refrigerator placement and geyser timing is far lower than the cost per unit saved through panels. It is unglamorous and it is the better investment.

Re-run the arithmetic when your load changes. The thing that moves a Bihar household across the threshold is usually a new air conditioner, a pump, or a vehicle charger. When your bill crosses roughly ₹1,500 a month, the answer may genuinely flip — see the ₹1,500 bill guide, and the ₹3,000 guide if it climbs further.

Conversely, the Bihar households for whom solar already works are recognisable: consistently high summer consumption, multiple cooling appliances, a clear flat terrace, and a bill sitting well into the upper slabs. Patna's growing suburban belt contains plenty of them. If that is you, the arithmetic in costs, savings and payback applies normally.

One structural check specific to older Bihar roofs

Flat RCC terraces are the norm across the state, and many are older or were built incrementally. Before accepting a quotation for a larger system, confirm that the roof can carry the array's dead load plus wind loading, particularly on a house that has already had a floor added. This is a question for a structural assessment rather than for a sales visit, and it is far cheaper to ask before installation than to discover afterwards. Ask specifically how the mounting anchors into the slab and whether penetrations are flashed and sealed against the monsoon.

On generation, plan honestly: June to September cloud across the Gangetic plain reduces daily output against dry-season peaks, and November to January smog trims irradiance for weeks. Patna's dense lanes and multi-storey neighbours add site-specific shade on top, so a shade assessment should precede any generation estimate.

Sizing honesty

Many mid-to-high bill Bihar homes land near 3 kW to capture the full central CFA ceiling. Going to 5 kW adds capacity with no extra central CFA — see 3 kW vs 5 kW and ₹3,000/month bill guide.

Common questions

Is rooftop solar worth it for a Bihar home?

For a large share of Bihar households, not yet, and good sun does not change that. The size of your bill sets the ceiling on what solar can save: a household paying ₹600 a month cannot be saved more than ₹600, and in practice less, because fixed charges survive commissioning. Homes averaging under roughly 150 to 200 units a month rarely clear a sensible payback. Homes with consistently high summer consumption, multiple cooling appliances and a clear flat terrace are a different case.

Why doesn't a smaller solar system just cost proportionally less?

Because cost does not scale down with savings. A small system costs more per kilowatt than a larger one, and the process overheads of feasibility, net metering and society approval are identical whether you save ₹600 or ₹3,000 a month. So a low bill shrinks the benefit without shrinking the cost proportionally, which is what stretches payback.

What should I do if the numbers say wait?

Three things. Track twelve months of units rather than rupees, noting the seasonal shape, since the annual average is the only figure worth sizing from. Spend on efficiency first, because at this consumption level the cost per unit saved through LED lighting, efficient fans, refrigerator placement and geyser timing is far lower than through panels. Then re-run the arithmetic when your load changes, typically on adding an air conditioner, pump or vehicle charger.

Which Bihar DISCOM should I select on the portal?

Read your bill header, since Bihar splits domestic supply between two companies. NBPDCL covers Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga, Purnia, Samastipur and the north and east districts, while SBPDCL covers Patna, Gaya, Bhagalpur, Munger and the south and central districts. Patna metro and most capital-region suburbs sit with SBPDCL. Border towns near Uttar Pradesh or Jharkhand may show a different company, so follow the bill rather than the map.

Can an older Bihar roof carry a solar array?

It needs checking, particularly on a house that has already had a floor added. Before accepting a quotation for a larger system, confirm the roof can carry the array's dead load plus wind loading. That is a question for a structural assessment rather than a sales visit, and it is far cheaper to ask before installation than to discover afterwards. Also ask how the mounting anchors into the slab and whether penetrations are flashed against the monsoon.

How much do monsoon and winter haze reduce solar output in Bihar?

June to September cloud across the Gangetic plain reduces daily output against dry-season peaks, and November to January smog trims irradiance for weeks each year. In Patna, dense lanes and multi-storey neighbours add site-specific shade on top, so a shade assessment should precede any generation estimate rather than following it.
