Rooftop solar for Uttar Pradesh homes — five DISCOMs, winter haze, bill first

Independent advice for domestic connections across UP’s five distribution companies. The Indo-Gangetic plain brings hot summers but also winter smog that trims real yield — your slab bill still decides payback after central CFA.

UP is India’s largest state by population — and one of the most fragmented for electricity distribution. A rooftop solar quote that says “UP average” without naming your DISCOM is a red flag. Sealix advises; we are not MVVNL, DVVNL, or any UP discom, and we are not your installer. Start with the free home check.

Which DISCOM is on your bill?

Uttar Pradesh domestic supply routes through five distribution companies. Read your bill header before selecting on pmsuryaghar.gov.in — wrong selection stalls feasibility.

NCR suburbs like Noida and Ghaziabad often sit on PVVNL even though they feel like “Delhi metro” — follow the bill, not the map pin.

PM Surya Ghar CFA

Central residential CFA is commonly ₹30,000 / ₹60,000 / up to ₹78,000 for eligible 1–3 kW+ systems after commissioning. UP does not add a separate Sealix subsidy beyond what official state notices publish at commissioning. Full walkthrough: PM Surya Ghar guide.

Winter haze — plan honestly

November–January smog across the Gangetic plain reduces irradiance versus clear-sky models for weeks each year. UP homes also deal with flat RCC terraces crowded with water tanks and parapet shade. Size from annual bill units, not a summer-only estimate or a Rajasthan comparison chart.

Who should still run bill maths

Lucknow city guide

Most Lucknow metro homes sit on MVVNL. For Lucknow-specific slab context, terrace realities, and typical 3 kW economics: rooftop solar in Lucknow.

Net metering

Grid-tied rooftop solar needs a bi-directional net meter from your UP DISCOM. Settlement rules follow the tariff order in force at commissioning — confirm live wording before signing an installer quote. National explainer: net metering in India.

Sizing honesty

Many mid-to-high bill UP homes land near 3 kW to capture the full central CFA ceiling. Going to 5 kW adds capacity with no extra central CFA — see 3 kW vs 5 kW.
