Grid-tied rooftop solar in Karnataka requires a bi-directional net meter from your DISCOM. Settlement rules (export credit, banking if any) follow the tariff order in force when your plant is commissioned — confirm live wording on your DISCOM portal before signing an installer quote. This is the first question in Karnataka and it changes the answer for a large number of households, so it belongs before any discussion of panels. A domestic free-unit benefit applies to eligible connections in the state, and where it covers most of a household's usage, the net amount payable each month can be small.
Rooftop solar does not generate income. It removes units you would otherwise have bought. If you are not buying many units, there is very little for a system costing a lakh or more to recover — and no amount of sunshine changes that arithmetic.

Homes that consistently pay a real monthly amount have a genuine case here, helped by good irradiance and a mild climate in much of the state. Homes whose bills are already near zero should keep their money. An installer who never asks to see your bills before proposing a capacity is selling hardware, not advice — which is precisely what the free bill check exists to separate.
Karnataka is administratively fragmented and geographically varied, and both matter. Five distribution companies each publish their own rooftop process and work to their own timelines, so a procedure described by a relative in another district may not be yours. Read the company name on your bill: BESCOM around Bengaluru, MESCOM on the coast and in Shivamogga, HESCOM in the north-west, GESCOM in the north-east, and Chamundeshwari around Mysuru.
The climates diverge just as sharply:
Panels are rated at a cell temperature they exceed for much of the year across most of India, and their efficiency falls as they heat up. Bengaluru and the southern plateau run closer to that rating than the hot plains do, which means output per kilowatt installed can beat what a raw irradiance ranking implies. It is one of the few genuinely favourable technical facts about solar on this plateau, and it is rarely mentioned because it does not fit a simple sunshine-hours comparison.
What erodes it is shade. Older Bengaluru neighbourhoods and much of the Malnad belt have substantial tree canopy, and because modules are wired in series, a shadow across part of one panel can pull down a whole string. Canopy also grows over a twenty-year asset. Ask for the shade path to be walked on the roof at more than one time of day, and ask how future growth was accounted for in the layout.
Where load is in the daytime — borewell or sump pumping, a home office, weekday cooling — the economics improve further, because a unit consumed as it is generated avoids your full retail tariff while an exported unit settles for less under the tariff order in force at commissioning. We advise against proceeding when the free-unit benefit already covers most of your consumption and the net payable amount is small; when the bill is modest in absolute terms, as in the ₹1,500 a month case; when a shared apartment terrace has no documented resolution, covered in society NOC for solar; when canopy or neighbouring buildings remove the middle of the day; or when almost all household load is at night, since grid-tied solar cannot serve it without batteries.
Check the sanctioned load on your bill before fixing capacity, since applying above it can trigger load-enhancement charges outside the quotation. This should be your first check, not an afterthought. Solar saves money only by removing units you would otherwise pay for, so if a domestic free-unit benefit already covers most of your consumption and your net payable amount is small, there is little left for a solar system to save. Read the net amount payable across twelve months of bills. Households whose consumption regularly runs past the covered threshold are paying full tariff on that excess, and that is exactly what solar can remove.

The coastal belt around Mangaluru and Udupi receives very heavy southwest monsoon rainfall with extended overcast periods, while the northern interior around Hubballi, Vijayapura and Kalaburagi is drier and brighter and generally out-generates it. The trade is that the north is much hotter, which reduces module efficiency, and dustier, which means more frequent cleaning.
