Nellore gets genuinely good sun, so the interesting questions here are not about sunlight. They are about salt-air corrosion, cyclone-rated structures, and whether your APSPDCL bill is large enough to pay back a 2–3 kW plant after the central subsidy.

Most solar pitches in Nellore lead with irradiance. That is the least useful number, because the coastal belt from Gudur up through Kavali gets plenty of sun and so does almost everywhere else in Andhra Pradesh. Two things actually decide whether a Nellore rooftop plant is a good decision: whether the hardware is specified for a corrosive coastal environment, and whether your monthly bill is big enough that avoided units repay the net cost. Start with the free bill check and work outward from there.
Solar modules are laminated and sealed, so salt in the air is rarely what fails first. What corrodes is everything holding the modules up and everything wired to them: the mounting structure, the nuts and bolts, the earthing conductors, and the metal enclosure of the inverter. Inland, a painted mild-steel structure might survive a decade looking untidy but functional. Within a few kilometres of the coast at Mypadu, Ramateertham or the Kavali stretch, the same structure can show serious rust in a fraction of that time.
Three specification points are worth insisting on in writing before you sign anything:
If you are close to the water, ask whether the modules carry salt-mist corrosion testing. Many mainstream modules do; the point is to make the installer state it rather than discover the answer in year four.
Nellore district sits on a stretch of the Bay of Bengal coast that takes cyclone activity. This is a real difference from inland Rayalaseema towns and it should change what you ask about the mounting structure. Uplift, not weight, is what tears rooftop arrays off buildings: wind gets under the panels and levers the whole assembly upward.
Ask the installer what design wind speed the structure is rated for, how it is anchored into the roof slab, and how many anchor points carry the array. Then ask how the roof penetrations are waterproofed, because those anchor points are also the places water will enter your ceiling if the job is done casually. Separately, check whether storm damage is covered by any insurance the installer arranges or by an add-on to your own home policy. A cheaper quote that skips all of this is not cheaper.
Pull out twelve months of APSPDCL bills rather than the most recent one. Nellore summers are hot and humid, so air-conditioning and fan load push April to June bills well above the winter months. An installer who sizes from a May bill will happily sell you a larger plant than your annual consumption justifies.
From each bill, note the units consumed, the tariff slab you reach, and the sanctioned load on the connection. The units tell you what solar can offset. The slab tells you what each avoided unit is actually worth, which matters because solar erases your most expensive units first. The sanctioned load matters because if you apply for PV capacity above it, load enhancement may add charges and paperwork that were never in the quotation.
Applications go through the national portal at pmsuryaghar.gov.in with APSPDCL selected as your DISCOM. From there it moves to feasibility, installation, inspection, a bi-directional net meter, and finally commissioning. The central subsidy is disbursed to your bank account after commissioning, not deducted at purchase, which means you fund the full amount first.
Central residential CFA commonly runs ₹30,000 for 1 kW, ₹60,000 for 2 kW, and up to ₹78,000 for 3 kW and larger eligible systems. There is no additional Nellore-specific or Sealix subsidy on top. Sub-division handling differs a little between Nellore town, Gudur and the rural sections, so confirm current APSPDCL wording rather than trusting a brochure.
A large number of mid-bill Nellore homes land at 3 kW, and not by coincidence. That is where the central CFA ceiling stops rising, so every kilowatt beyond it is paid at full price with no extra central assistance. Before anyone talks you into 5 kW, read 3 kW vs 5 kW and check whether your annual units genuinely support the larger plant.
Two local details affect the yield you should expect. The October to December north-east monsoon trims generation compared to the dry-season peak, so an annual average is the honest basis for any savings estimate. And coastal dust plus salt film settles on glass, so panels here need cleaning more often than a vendor's maintenance-free story implies. Both are manageable; neither should be discovered after installation.
We say no more often than installers do. Rooftop solar is usually the wrong call for a Nellore home when the domestic bill sits below roughly ₹1,000 a month, when the terrace is shared in an apartment block without a clear society NOC, when the roof rights are unsettled, or when the property is likely to be sold within a couple of years. Tenants and commercial or aquaculture loads are outside what this advice covers; this is domestic grid-tied rooftop only.

Panels themselves are sealed, but mounting structures, fasteners and inverter enclosures corrode faster in the coastal belt from Mypadu through Kavali. Ask for hot-dip galvanised structure, stainless fasteners, and an inverter mounted in shade away from direct salt spray. Salt-mist tested modules are worth asking about within a few kilometres of the coast.
Only the PM Surya Ghar central CFA applies: commonly Rs 30,000 for 1 kW, Rs 60,000 for 2 kW and up to Rs 78,000 for 3 kW and above for eligible residential connections. There is no separate Nellore or Sealix subsidy, and the money arrives as a bank transfer after commissioning, not as a discount from the installer.
Coastal sun is strong, but the bill still decides. Domestic APSPDCL bills below roughly Rs 1,000 a month rarely justify the net cost after CFA. From about Rs 1,500 upward the higher tariff slabs make a 2-3 kW plant far easier to justify, because you avoid your most expensive units first.
Nellore sits on a cyclone-exposed stretch of the Bay of Bengal coast, so structure rating matters more here than inland. Confirm the wind speed the structure is designed for, how it is anchored to the roof slab, and that penetrations are properly waterproofed. Insurance covering storm damage is worth asking about.
