Rooftop solar in Indore — how your exports are settled decides the savings

Indore's climate is genuinely well suited to rooftop solar, so the interesting question is financial. Whether your surplus units are offset against your consumption or bought at a separate rate changes the payback on an identical system, and it is the detail most quotations gloss over.

Last reviewed

The Malwa plateau gives Indore good sunshine and a summer that is hot without being punishing, which is a better combination for solar than pure irradiance figures suggest. Given that, the thing most worth your attention is not the roof or the weather. It is the arrangement under which your DISCOM accounts for the units you send back to the grid. Start with the free bill check, then read the section below carefully — it is where money is won or lost.

Net metering, net billing, and why the difference is large

A rooftop system generates most strongly in the middle of the day, which is often when a house uses least. The surplus flows to the grid, and how you are credited for it depends on the mechanism that applies to your connection.

The consequence is significant. Under net metering, a system that exports heavily still performs well financially. Under net billing, those same exported units earn considerably less, so the savings depend far more on how much you consume directly. An identical plant on an identical roof can have materially different payback under the two arrangements.

These rules are set by state regulation and revised periodically, and they can differ by system capacity and consumer category. So do not accept "net metering is available" as an answer. Ask which mechanism applies to a domestic connection of your size, at what rate export is credited, and confirm it against the current tariff order rather than an installer's brochure. Our national explainer is net metering in India.

Self-consumption is the lever you control

Because a directly consumed unit avoids your full retail tariff while an exported unit is credited at whatever the rules allow, shifting usage into daylight hours raises savings without altering a single component.

In practice this means running the washing machine at midday rather than at night, scheduling the water pump for the afternoon, heating water while the sun is up, and — if you own an electric vehicle — charging during the day where possible. Households with someone at home during the day, or anyone working from home, extract more from the same system than households that are empty until evening.

This also reframes sizing. If exports are credited poorly, a smaller system matched to your daytime baseline can produce a better return than a larger one that exports a big surplus. Sizing to the roof rather than the consumption pattern is a common and expensive error.

Which distribution company handles your application

Madhya Pradesh is divided into distribution zones, and Indore sits in the west zone, served by the west-zone distribution company (Madhya Pradesh Paschim Kshetra Vidyut Vitaran Company). The east and central zones are separate companies with their own offices and timelines.

Select the company named on your own bill when applying at pmsuryaghar.gov.in. The sequence then runs feasibility approval, installation, inspection, bi-directional net meter, and commissioning. Central residential assistance commonly runs ₹30,000 for 1 kW, ₹60,000 for 2 kW, and up to ₹78,000 for eligible systems of 3 kW and above, credited to your bank account after commissioning rather than deducted from the invoice. Climate: better than the headline numbers suggest

Indore's elevation moderates the summer relative to lower-lying parts of central and western India. Since modules lose efficiency as they heat up, a slightly cooler summer means slightly smaller losses, and the annual yield per kilowatt tends to be respectable rather than spectacular in the way a desert location is.

The monsoon is well defined, which cuts generation across those months but also washes the array regularly. That is a genuine convenience: soiling is much less of an ongoing chore here than in dry, dusty regions. Cleaning is still needed in the dry pre-monsoon stretch, so agree the arrangement with your installer, but it is not the constant battle it is further west.

Apartments, sanctioned load, and the practical checks

Indore has grown quickly, and much of that growth is apartment housing. Terraces in multi-owner buildings are common property, so a documented society resolution is needed before any work begins, along with clarity on which meter benefits and how the plant is accounted for between residents. See society NOC for solar and apartment rooftop solar — in shared buildings this is usually the longest part of the timeline.

Also check the sanctioned load on your bill. Applying for PV capacity above it can require load enhancement, adding charges and processing that sit outside the quoted scope. And collect twelve months of bills to identify the tariff slab you reach, since solar displaces your most expensive units first.

Sizing, and when we advise against it

Many mid-bill homes land at 3 kW, because central assistance stops rising above that capacity — see 3 kW vs 5 kW and the price bands in 3 kW solar price in India. Where exports are credited below retail, resist upsizing beyond what you can genuinely consume during the day.

We advise against buying when the domestic bill is under roughly ₹1,000 a month, when apartment consent is unresolved, when the household consumes almost entirely at night and exports are poorly credited, or when the property may be sold shortly. Sealix does not sell or install equipment — we read the bill, give an honest verdict, and introduce a certified partner only when the numbers work.

Common questions

What is the difference between net metering and net billing?

Under net metering, exported units are offset against imported units, so an exported unit is effectively worth close to your retail tariff. Under net billing, exports are purchased at a separately notified rate that is usually lower than retail. The same rooftop system therefore saves less under net billing, which makes the settlement mechanism a central question rather than a technicality.

Which DISCOM serves Indore for rooftop solar?

Indore falls in the west zone of Madhya Pradesh distribution, handled by the west-zone distribution company (Madhya Pradesh Paschim Kshetra Vidyut Vitaran Company). Select the company printed on your bill when applying on the national portal, since the east and central zones are served by separate companies.

Why does self-consumption matter for solar savings in Indore?

Because a unit you use the moment it is generated avoids your full retail tariff, while a unit exported is credited at whatever the applicable settlement rule allows. Shifting heavy loads such as washing machines, pumps and geysers into daylight hours therefore increases savings without changing any hardware.

Is Indore's climate good for rooftop solar?

It is favourable. The Malwa plateau has good sunshine with a less extreme summer than lower-lying parts of central and western India, which means slightly smaller heat-related efficiency losses. A defined monsoon reduces generation for a few months and also rinses the array, so soiling is less of a burden than in dry regions.
