Rooftop solar in Ahmedabad — a crowded market, and how to compare quotes in it

Ahmedabad homeowners have the opposite of a scarcity problem. There are plenty of installers, plenty of offers, and a price spread wide enough to be confusing. Knowing your supplier and knowing how to read a quotation is most of the work.

Last reviewed

Gujarat adopted residential rooftop solar earlier and more heavily than most of India, and Ahmedabad is at the centre of that. The upside is a genuinely competitive market with experienced installers and easy access to hardware. The downside is that competition on headline price produces quotations that look comparable and are not. This page is mostly about telling them apart. Run the free bill check first so you know what size you are even shopping for.

First, work out who supplies your electricity

Ahmedabad is not served by a single utility, and this catches people out at the application stage. Much of the city proper is supplied by Torrent Power, a private distribution licensee. Areas outside that licence, including many surrounding and semi-urban pockets, fall under state distribution companies in the GUVNL group such as UGVCL or MGVCL depending on location.

This matters for practical reasons rather than legal ones. The application route, how feasibility is assessed, how the bi-directional net meter is arranged, and how quickly inspections happen all differ between a private licensee and a state company. So does the list of empanelled vendors. Read the supplier name on your own bill and plan around that, rather than following advice written for a different utility. If you own property in more than one area, do not assume the process that worked at one address applies at the other.

Why the quote spread is so wide — and what it hides

In a mature market, the cheapest quote is rarely cheap by magic. Almost always it is cheaper because something specific is smaller, thinner, shorter or excluded. The differences that matter most:

The most useful single trick is to divide each gross quote by the system wattage to get a per-watt figure, which makes different capacities directly comparable. Our national bands are set out in 3 kW solar price in India and 5 kW solar price. If one quote sits far below the rest, the right response is not delight but a specific question about what is different.

Heat is a design input here, not a footnote

Ahmedabad summers are severe, and solar modules produce less as they get hotter. Panels are rated at a standard cell temperature that a terrace here exceeds for much of the year, so a bright, punishing May afternoon can deliver less than a clear, mild February day.

Some of that loss is avoidable through design. An array raised enough for air to circulate beneath it runs cooler than one mounted flush to the roof. An inverter mounted on a shaded, ventilated wall will not reduce its own output to protect itself the way one baking on a west wall will. Ask about both, and treat any generation estimate built on peak-summer conditions as marketing. The honest basis is annual units.

The subsidy, and claims to be careful about

Applications for residential systems go through pmsuryaghar.gov.in, followed by feasibility, installation, inspection, net meter and commissioning. Central assistance commonly runs ₹30,000 for 1 kW, ₹60,000 for 2 kW, and up to ₹78,000 for eligible systems of 3 kW and above, credited to your bank account after commissioning.

Because Gujarat has a long history of rooftop programmes, this is also a market where subsidy claims get muddled — sometimes innocently, sometimes not. Older state scheme terms circulate as though they are current, and "subsidy included in the price" usually describes a vendor's own financing rather than the scheme. Verify any state-level benefit against an official notice; our summary of how these interact is in state top-up subsidies. Process detail sits in the PM Surya Ghar guide and eligibility.

Roof and society realities

Ahmedabad's housing mix runs from independent bungalows with generous terraces to dense apartment blocks and older pol housing in the walled city. Independent houses with clear roof rights are the straightforward installations. Apartment terraces are common property and require a documented society resolution before anything proceeds — the process is in society NOC for solar and the ownership questions in apartment rooftop solar. In older, tightly packed areas, shading from neighbouring buildings is the recurring constraint and should be assessed on site rather than estimated from a satellite image.

Sizing, and when we advise against it

Most mid-bill homes land at 3 kW, because central assistance stops rising above that capacity and every additional kilowatt is paid in full — see 3 kW vs 5 kW. Check the sanctioned load on your bill too, since applying for capacity above it can bring load-enhancement charges that were never in the quote.

We say no when the domestic bill is below roughly ₹1,000 a month, when a shared terrace has no NOC, when roof condition needs attention first, or when the home is likely to be sold shortly. Sealix does not sell or install anything — we read your bill, give a verdict, and introduce a certified partner only when the numbers work.

Common questions

Who is my electricity supplier in Ahmedabad for a solar application?

Much of Ahmedabad city is supplied by Torrent Power, a private licensee, while surrounding and semi-urban areas fall under state distribution companies within the GUVNL group such as UGVCL or MGVCL. The application route, feasibility handling and net-meter process differ between them, so identify the supplier printed on your bill before applying.

Why do rooftop solar quotes in Ahmedabad vary so much?

Gujarat has one of India's most developed residential rooftop markets, so there are many vendors competing on headline price. The spread usually reflects real differences in module quality, structure height and steel weight, inverter brand and warranty, cable sizing and what is excluded from scope, rather than one company simply being generous.

How much subsidy applies to a rooftop system in Ahmedabad?

Central PM Surya Ghar assistance is commonly Rs 30,000 for 1 kW, Rs 60,000 for 2 kW, and up to Rs 78,000 for eligible systems of 3 kW and above, transferred to your bank account after commissioning. Any additional state-level benefit must be verified against an official notice rather than an installer's claim.

Does Ahmedabad's heat reduce solar output?

Yes. Modules are rated at a standard cell temperature and lose efficiency as they get hotter, and Ahmedabad summers push panel temperatures far above that rating. A raised structure with airflow underneath and a shaded, ventilated inverter position both reduce the loss. Size from annual units rather than a summer-peak estimate.
