Licence areas do not follow district lines exactly, so go by the company named on your bill. Selecting the wrong DISCOM stalls feasibility for weeks.
The central subsidy is ₹30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW and ₹18,000 for the third: ₹30,000 for 1 kW, ₹60,000 for 2 kW, and a ₹78,000 cap from 3 kW upward. It is paid after commissioning and inspection. Older Surya Gujarat state-subsidy resolutions are still searchable online, but they do not prove a current cash entitlement. The MNRE national portal sends Gujarat subsidy applications to suryagujarat.guvnl.in, GUVNL’s single-window rooftop portal for DGVCL, MGVCL, PGVCL, UGVCL and Torrent Power areas. It is busy: the live counter showed over 5.2 lakh consumer applications when we checked on 4 October 2026. The SURYA Gujarat FAQ sets out how the process works:

Track at SURYA Gujarat → Track application. Under GERC’s fifth net-metering amendment (2025), PM Surya Ghar homes are treated as bound by the regulations from the commissioning date, so there is no separate written connectivity agreement to sign. If an installer asks you to wait for one, ask what they mean.

Torrent Power customers in Ahmedabad apply through the same SURYA Gujarat portal, picking an installer empanelled for Torrent areas, while feasibility and the net meter are handled by Torrent rather than a GUVNL company. A state-average generation figure hides more than it reveals here, because Gujarat contains genuinely different operating environments and the hardware that suits one is wrong for another.
Kutch and north Gujarat are arid, bright and windy. This is the best generation resource in the state and also the harshest duty: dust accumulates quickly with little rain to clear it, and mounting has to be rated for real wind loading rather than a generic structure. Budget for a cleaning routine, because a thin, even film of dust costs several percent without ever looking dirty enough to bother about.
Saurashtra and the Gulf coastline add salt to that dust. Modules are sealed and cope well, but the structure, fasteners, earthing and inverter enclosure corrode faster near the shore. Galvanising quality, stainless fixings and a sheltered inverter position are the sensible baseline in Jamnagar, Porbandar and the coastal belt, and this stretch also sees cyclone activity, which makes anchor specification a contract matter rather than a detail.
South Gujarat — Surat, Vapi and the industrial corridor — is more humid and carries industrial particulate that binds to glass more stubbornly than desert dust. It also receives noticeably more monsoon rainfall than Kutch, so annual output is lower than the north despite similar latitude.
Central Gujarat, the Ahmedabad–Vadodara metro belt, is the most conventional case: dense housing, shading from neighbouring buildings, and the highest concentration of both good and bad installers. City-level detail is in rooftop solar in Ahmedabad.
Gujarat's solar supply chain is unusually developed, and that genuinely benefits homeowners: competition is real and pricing is among the country's keenest. The same depth means a large number of very small operators, some of whom will not exist when a warranty claim arrives in year six.
So treat a wide quote spread as information rather than noise. It usually reflects real differences — module and inverter grade, structure steel section and coating, and whether wiring, earthing and lightning protection were priced in or quietly left out. Compare a full component list with makes and models and a cost per watt, not headline totals.

The cheapest quote in a crowded market is frequently cheap because something was removed from it. Ask what.
This trips up Ahmedabad and Surat households in particular. The application portal is shared: SURYA Gujarat covers Torrent Power areas as well as the four GUVNL companies. But if Torrent issues your bill, the feasibility visit, net meter and commissioning are handled by Torrent’s own field teams, not a GUVNL sub-division, and the installer must be empanelled for Torrent areas.
Practically, that means the timeline you hear from a friend on the other side of the city may not be your timeline, and an installer fluent in one desk is not automatically fluent in the other. Ask which desk your installer has actually processed applications through recently. Export settlement follows the tariff order in force at commissioning, and an exported unit is generally worth less than one consumed as it is generated — see net metering in India.
Sunshine does not rescue weak economics. We would advise against proceeding when the domestic bill is consistently modest, because the units solar displaces are the cheap ones and payback stretches well past the point where it is worth the capital — the ₹1,500 a month walkthrough shows the shape of it. Also when a shared society terrace has no documented resolution (society NOC), when neighbouring buildings take the middle of the day, or when the property is likely to change hands within a couple of years.
Check the sanctioned load on your bill before fixing capacity, since applying above it can trigger a load-enhancement charge that sits outside the installer's quote. And remember central assistance stops rising above 3 kW, so extra capacity is paid at full price — 3 kW vs 5 kW. Use the Track Application page on suryagujarat.guvnl.in with your application or consumer details. It shows the stage your file has reached and the name of your DISCOM sub-division. If document verification is pending, or the plant is installed but the net meter is not connected, the SURYA Gujarat FAQ says to contact that sub-division. Whichever company issues your bill. Most of the state is served by the GUVNL group companies, with UGVCL in the north, MGVCL in the central belt, DGVCL in the south and PGVCL across Saurashtra and Kutch, while much of Ahmedabad city is served by Torrent Power. Read the company name on your bill header rather than assuming it from your district, because licence areas do not follow district lines.
Higher irradiance does raise output per kilowatt compared with cloudier states, but it does not change the arithmetic that decides payback. Your saving is the number of units you avoid buying multiplied by your tariff, so a home with a modest bill in sunny Gujarat can still have a worse payback than a high-bill home elsewhere.
